Hverir Mud Pot

Hverir Mud Pot

A boiling mud pot at Hverir.

To get this shot, I used a telephoto lens (70-200mm) and zoomed all the way in. Needing to capture fast action, I wanted a very high shutter speed, but also had to balance the fading light (this was just about 10 pm). That ended up being 1/1250 of a second at ISO 1600 and f/4. Standing only about six feet from the boiling mud, I fired off a dozen shots in a row, just holding my finger on the shutter. I repeated this a couple times. The mud plops are too fast to respond to, so the only way to catch them is with bursts of images. I got a few other interesting bursts, but this was the most eye-catching.
