Sandfell is the site of a deserted farm and cemetery. Situated on a grassy oasis south of Skaftafell, it is surrounded by volcanoes, glaciers and wastelands - all of which made this a very difficult place to live. Nevertheless, the site was continuously inhabited for nearly 1000 years. The last farmers moved away in 1945, and the last burial occurred in 1950. The view in this picture is from inside the cemetery, looking out through the wooden gate to the west, toward the vast sandur.
