Old Bridge at Gođafoss

Old Bridge at Gođafoss

After our tour along the eastern side of Eyjafjörđur , Rachel and I drove back in to the highland interior to Gođafoss. Despite being a major landmark that has been famous for a millennium, there is not much at Gođafoss - just the few buildings you see in the picture here, consisting of a restaurant, hotel and campsite. Most of the area, especially around the dramatic waterfall (just upstream from the bridge in this picture) is blissfully free of development and blight.

This narrow, one-lane bridge over the roaring river Skjálfanafljót, was built in 1930 - which is quite old for a bridge in Iceland. And the original pilings, from 1882, are evident as well. This bridge is no longer used for vehicles (nor am I sure how cars and trucks, especially, ever would have fit on it), having been replaced by a modern new bridge in 1972.
