Next door to Skriđruklaustur, connected by a scenic path, is Snæfellsstofa. This is a visitor center for the eastern side of Vatnajökull National Park (on the north side of the glacier, opposite Skaftafell). Iceland has many striking buildings featuring bold, modern Scandinavian architecture, but this was easily the most stunning. Part of that is location. This picture does not lie, the building is really out in the middle of a broad, open hillside with nothing else around it in three directions (Skriđruklaustur being on its south). The views from inside the visitor center are just as beautiful, and the museum exhibits (mostly on natural history of eastern Iceland) are both interesting and multi-lingual.
Perhaps it was good weather helping our mood, but Rachel and I kept feeling like we were hitting the jackpot around Lagarfljót, over and over again. It may not make any Iceland Top 10 lists, but it was one of our favorites.
