At Skaftafell, the mountains rise abruptly from the immense glacial plains of Skeiđarársandur. As the elevation of the mountains protects them from periodic floods of glacial waters, they grow thick with vegetation. Although it's a formidable place to try to make a living, the area has been settled and farmed for many centuries. At the old farmstead Sel, I came across a group of horses meandering through a lush pasture. I was struck by the incredible contrast between the fertile, pastoral land before me and the vast wasteland just behind it.
